Drinking sensibly

How much is too much?

Having a drink may feel like an easy way to unwind at the end of the day but one glass can often lead to two or three.

The Chief Medical Officer recommends that:

  • If you do drink as much as 14 units per week, spread these evenly over 3 days or more.
  • Drinking above these guidelines increases the risk of various health conditions. Including cancer (especially breast cancer for women), liver cirrhosis and high blood pressure to name a few.
  • Having one or two heavy drinking sessions a week increases your risk of death from long term illnesses, accidents and injury.
