National Smile Month highlights three key messages to encourage, develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are:                            National Smile Month

1.Brush your teeth twice daily - last thing at night and one other time in the day using a fluoride toothpaste.

2.Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.

3.Visit your dentist regularly.

During Smile Month local Children's Centres will be holding activities and offering advice on how to care for young children's teeth so we can improve the quality of smiles in Medway and have lots of fun doing it!

It is important that first teeth are cared for with twice daily brushing. Tooth brushing is an essential, learnt life skill and should become an accepted and fun part of your child's daily routine.

Choose toothpaste that contains fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel. Make sure the quantity is right and check the packaging for details. Children under 3 years need no less than 1000ppmFlouride, while children over 3 and everyone else need 1400-1500ppmFlouride.

Remember you only need to use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste - a smear is enough for children under 3 and a pea sized blob for children over 3. Take a look at the pictures to see if you are using the right amount for your child.

Don't encourage children to rinse out after brushing because teeth need time to absorb the fluoride. Encourage children to spit out the excess foam instead. Try not to give food or drink for 30 minutes to an hour after tooth brushing or after brushing at bedtime to ensure continued protection while children sleep.

Try to limit sugar in the diet to four times in the day, preferably at meal times and avoid eating or drinking anything sugary in between meals. Instead have fruit, vegetables or savoury snacks but if you do have a sugary snack, try drinking a glass of water afterwards to dilute the acid created when bacteria break down the sugar.

Everyone should visit a dentist regularly to have the teeth and mouth checked. Children should see a dentist from a very early age so they get used to the familiar smells and sounds of the surgery and to build confidence and acceptance for future visits.
